What happens when doors are installed improperly?
- Poor performance of the door — energy inefficiency
- Leakage, which can go undetected and cause rot
- Door doesn’t operate properly and rubs when you open and close it
- The door will not lock properly which leaves your home at risk
Door Installation Method
There are two installation methods:
DETAILS:
-
The existing door jamb remains and the door slab is removed.
-
Hinges are mortised into the slab in the field, all hardware is bored in the field
-
The new door slab is custom fit into the existing jamb
- Common for interior doors but not recommended for exterior doors
PROS:
- More cost effective
- Can be a viable option in elaborate door units where it is cost prohibitive to change the entire unit
CONS:
- Does not offer the energy efficiency or smooth operation of a new door and frame because you are constrained by the condition of the existing door frame
DETAILS:
- The old door, jamb, and slab are completely removed down to the framing – This includes removal of interior trim
- The door complete prehung door unit which includes a door slab, frame, and sill is installed into the opening
- New trim is installed on the interior and exterior of the home
-
Doors should be foamed, caulked, and a sill pan should be installed using high quality product such as OSI and 3M – This insulates the space around the door and seals the door blocking air and water from entering the home – The sill pan ensures that the framing underneath the door is protected and sealed keeping water from entering underneath the door
PROS:
- The preferred way to install an exterior door to ensure a watertight seal and proper operation
CONS:
- More intrusive – in addition to painting the door itself, the trim, and possibly the wall will need to be painted
